Assembly Majority Leader Cecilia Aguiar-Curry (D-Winters) released the following statement today:
(SACRAMENTO) – “We have to do right by our wildfire victims and do right by California ratepayers to make sure families can afford to keep their lights on. That takes time and we won’t stop working to make sure we get it right this Fall.”
“In Assembly District 04, I’ve seen the devastation of wildfire up close with my own eyes. In my first year in office, the 2017 Wine Country Fires set new heartbreaking records for destruction in the state. My team and I worked tirelessly to get resources to communities across California. People are never really able to wrap their heads around how long the road to recovery truly is. Some of my constituents are still rebuilding from fires, including the 2015 Valley Fire, that happened before I was first elected in 2016. These families have waited long enough. They need a system that gets them back on their feet, not one that leaves them fighting for years to get the help they deserve.”
“At the same time, every Californian is struggling to pay their rent or mortgage, put food on the table, and keep up with rising utility bills. We have to make sure that our efforts to help wildfire victims do not have unintended consequences to ratepayers.”
“We can do both. We can get wildfire survivors paid faster, hold utilities accountable, keep Wall Street out of wildfire claims, and protect California families from unaffordable electricity bills.”
“That’s not too much to ask. It’s our responsibility to the people we serve.”
